Companies today must BE, not Seem

Before the internet, sounding impressive was more important than being impressive.Social media is smoke and mirrors

Today, with consumers having a voice it is much harder for mediocre or false promises to spread.

The shift companies today must make is not only of marketing dollars (from traditional mediums to digital mediums), but of their entire marketing mindset.

More $ = More Social, no?

This confuses a lot of companies as they pump money into social media consultants, pages and advertisers and are left with nobody liking them other than the few hundred friends they begged to like their Facebook page.

The Empowered Customer

1. Delighted customers love to spread the word about products and services they love. People want to share that gift with others.

2. Pissed customers want to spread the word to others; WARNING – terrible experiences ahead.

I always find it funny Apple does no “social media marketing” but is one of the most talked about and beloved brands out there. Perhaps companies should focus more on leading and delighting customers with brilliant design and innovation rather than following the brand-wagon of setting up Facebook and Twitter profiles.

Social Media was never about you companies, it’s about the people.

But companies (especially the old ones) can’t comprehend the idea of giving gifts and being remarkable.

It’s not part of their DNA so instead they continue to pay more $ aiming to seem. Unfortunately, you can’t throw money at social media to make it successful.

Its a new era, with new rules and leadership is not optional.

But it will only work if we (the people) keep them honest. Now pread the word.
